Dropping the hammer on the information superhighway
Where
do I come in? I've been fascinated by automobiles since I was six years
old. I never get tired of the way a car cruises down the highway, the way
a racecar negotiates a track, or the way movie vehicles fly through stunt
or chase sequences. I've wanted to drive that way myself, but gravitational
constraints, combined with a healthy self-preservationist mindset, and a
respect for law enforcement, generally keep me on the legal side of things.
Don't get me wrong, it still happens. Cultures and sub-cultures, existing in various corners of the world, regularly do things to cars people like myself just don't have the deep pockets for. An unassuming automobile can be turned into a formiddable track racer for the right price. A common vehicle can become a platform for self-expression. In the simplest of terms, people exist worldwide that enjoy the idea of tuning a car to a different level from what exists. Regardless of geographical origin, mindset, or price range, car enthusiasts worldwide sometimes pursue the passion of speed on a daily basis. Some make do with the tools and techniques they know, while some are fortunate enough to have a hand in designing their own car parts. Make no mistake - somewhere around the world, right now, a group of people is busy tuning up their cars. |
At the same time, though, I feel as if I have written this to also voice my feelings on the state of the car enthusiast lifestyle. I am not trying to hypocritically separate myself from the pack, since I pursue it myself. I hope that we all analyze the kinds of actions we take, and the people we influence. We all need to understand how dangerous and life-threatening street racing is in real life, and assign the activity a proper place: a controlled environment, like a racetrack. In a videogame, lawless antics can be restrained with a press of the reset button. Some folks learn this the hard way in life. Some never get the chance to learn it. Have fun in life, and play hard too... but don't forget that the videogames never show what happens when someone really gets hurt in the real world. Please obey the rules of the road out there. The tickets, embarrassment, and life you save may very well be your own. Ramon Reyes, webmaster April 8, 2004 |

THE AUTOMOBILE - One of the most controversial, dangerous, and amazing methods of transportation. We see them in commercials, and practically live out of them on long commutes. Billions of us have been affected by one of the most far-reaching technological advances of the 20th century - whether we take a bus or a taxi, or if we drive ourselves. Talk to most people on the street, and you might find some people are content to simply drive a car. They usually go to a car wash, change the oil every 3,000 miles, and maybe replace the windshield wiper fluid themselves, if need be. There are, however, several million people out there who look at a car and see untapped horsepower, unexpected velocity, and generally possess an attitude and a mindset that wants to do more than just drive a car - they want to master it. |
