Computers - My Career Goals

Computing For a Job

It really didn't dawn on me until high school that working with computers would be something I could take an interest in. But I took plenty of classes in high school, and spent too many hours in front of monitors to not take advantage of the brain time, and invest it in paying work. The Dot Com industry was just beginning to take shape and take off when I graduated with my diploma. After college, working with computers on a cooperative education basis, and after the Dot Crash, I still pursue the idea of IT employment, because it is still interesting, and it still pays well.

I continue to search for jobs where I can help create solutions through the use of technology. I like the creative process - this is probably due to all the time I spent programming in high school. I also like collaborating with others to complete a task at hand - I find I enjoy working as a team to solve problems more often than working alone, but I will do so if necessary.

Bits, Bytes, and Disks - My Computing Hobby Throughout The Years

In my years as a child (around 8 or so), my parents bought our first family computer - a Tandy 1000HX. It was my window into the world of computing. I played lots of games on it at first. As I began to take computer classes in school, however, I began seeing it as something different.

It was not just a entertainment system for me anymore, because I learned how to program on it over time, using the BASIC programming language. I took a new interest in this part of computing, because entertainment consoles like the NES, Super NES, and Genesis did not have the available tools to develop software in the public eye (programming for them was simply not possible or affordable to me, period). Plus, it just felt cool making things happen on a computer. It was an empowering feeling to make code work for you.

Programming thusly became more and more a point of interest in my life, and computer games a hobby to keep stoking interest in the idea of perhaps making computer games someday. Click here for the story of computers and me.

One For Every Day of the Week... Times Two?

When I first started playing computer games, I had two of them to play on my first computer. Now, I have more games than I can shake a stick at.

There's nothing I can say in my defense, except that some people collect shoes, some people collect cards, and I collect computer games. I'm seriously thinking about lightening the load, and offloading a whole bunch of games I have. Interested in finding out what kinds of games I play? Click here for more info on the many computer games which have sucked solid months of time from my life already. And who knows? I might give some of them away.

Developing for the Gameboy Advance - Code On the Run

Just a few years ago, when the Gameboy Advance began to hit its stride, I got introduced to the idea of development through an online contact. A few months later, I had a brief audience with this gentleman, and a CD in my hand that held the key for GBA programming. 2 years later, after a few brief experiments followed by coding silence, the bug still runs strong in my system to make games for it. Click here to discover how easy it is to code for it, and what could be if I choose to follow through as a GBA programmer.

The Reyes Console Dynasty

The first videogame system I ever had was an Atari 2600 - an amazing machine that introduced me to the world of interactive entertainment. It was an entirely different experience for me unlike any games played outside with my friends. I enjoyed playing games such as Defender, Pole Position, and E.T. By the time I was done playing with my 2600, I had a collection of at least 9 to 10 other titles.

Today, I have a Sega Dreamcast, which I still play, and again, hold about 10 or more titles for. Playing games on consoles has been a part of my life through my childhood and teenage years, and for me, videogames were, alongside my computer games, my major sport. (I still play them a lot, but I am also trying to get out more and do more active things, such as walking. It is good to unplug.)

The story of my videogame diary begins here.
